Joe Hewer of Happy Grillmore BBQ team captured first place in Ribs, Pork and Brisket at the Smoke on the Trails in Gardner, Kansas. But a 28th-place finish among 48 teams in Chicken left Happy Grillmore in a tie for the Grand Championship with Joe Pearce of Slaps BBQ as both wound up with a score of 704.5372. Joe Pearce won the tie-breaker, denying Joe Hewer a first GC. We visit with Hewer about the mixed emotions and the history of the Happy Grillmore team.
We also catch up with Richard Fergola, GM at the KC Grilling Company in Olathe, Kansas. As Fergolicious BBQ, he’s been on television’s BBQ Pitmasters and Food Network’s Chopped Grillmasters and also is a member of the KCBS Board of Directors. A man of many hats, Richard gives us a wide-ranging conversation kicking off with what it’s like in Kansas City this week on what was supposed to be American Royal World Series of BBQ time.
